Things I Did Today
Worked a 12 hour shift.  Started & finished Point Omega by Don Delillo in a single sitting.  Ran 5.5 km  Breakfast for dinner.  Clipped my toe-nails.  Staying awake past 10 p.m.

Delicate Machine
Two years ago getting sick was just that—getting sick. But, as a runner there is so much more at stake. The body is a delicate machine and it only takes the slightest change for good to become bad.  Was chatting with my friend Sarah and she said it perfectly: Man, every time I stub a toe, or roll an ankle, the first thing I think of is “Will this effect my running?” Life seems to...

Loyal runblrs, running tweeps, Koop. I am still here and this blog is still devoted to running. I’ve just been sick the past few days. Normal ranting and raving about running shall resume shortly. Enjoy the pavement for me.   In the mean while, check out this tumblr: http://readingardor.tumblr.com/ I’m participating in a summer reading project with my friend Sarah. What’s not...

Just put on your socks.
You just worked a twelve hour shift. The couch looks inviting. Problem. You feel guilty and know that you’ll feel better if you go out for a run. But, you just worked an insanely long shift and again, the couch looks so inviting. You’ve also not eaten your dinner. What to do? What do you do?! Solution. Put on a single piece of your running gear: your shirt, your track-pants/shorts,...

_ _
I am not a particularly religious person. I was raised in a Hindu household. I believe in God, but what God is, what it ALL means is something I struggle with. I have a feeling it’s something many people struggle with. I recognize that there is something larger than myself and I have more questions than answers. And I’m fine with this. I believe that these questions are worth seeking...

Will running on concrete increase my risk of... →
But there are other factors to consider, Dr. Boyer says. Smooth, flat, paved surfaces will result in every stride being basically the same, so your muscles and joints are stressed in exactly the same way throughout the run. This. On unpaved surfaces, in contrast, no two steps are the same, which provides slight variations in the impacts on your body, reducing the chance of an overuse injury....

Anonymous asked: about runnings ultimate test ... I beg to disagree. There's so many ultras right now that quite a few are harder than the marathon des sables. What about the Barkley? Or the Tor des Geants (330km with 24.000D+ in under 150 hours) ... it's just that there are a few hyped ones that get the attention (UTMB et al), and a lot of novices that are out there to prove how tough they are ... the...

Just Get Out There
I ran 6 km yesterday evening after working a 12 hour day. I woke up this morning and thought about putting off my run. I only get one day off a week and sometimes you just want to sit at home and do nothing, especially when you work the crazy hours and long shifts that I work. But, after some frustrating hesitation, I put on my gear and stepped outside. It was 20+ C and 50-70 km wind...

Goals. Ongoing.
GOAL: eat more vegetables drink more milk cut out salty snacks (I’ve been eating too many potato chips!) run 55 + km by Saturday night.  I did eat more vegetables this week, but that’s an ongoing goal.  I did also drink more milk, even tried some almond milk. It wasn’t all that different, so I may try to make it a bit more of a habit.  I also reduced the amount of salty...

notjustrunnershigh replied to your post: notjustrunnershigh replied to your post: Mixed… Don’t throw out your head! You may need it. If you can, rotate two unlike pairs. It’ll keep your legs from adjusting and getting overuse injuries from landing the same way over and over in the same type of shoes. I swear it helps. This is a good advice, I may have to pick up another pair. Excuse to...

notjustrunnershigh replied to your post: Mixed Bag Sometimes shoes do get sore spots where the cushion gets beaten down faster, and it affects the ride. Do you have more than one pair? :) I have another I’ve not worn yet. Same exact model, just brand new. I’ve heard that I should alternate two pairs while running. Maybe it is time to break out that other pair. I was also in a really...

Mixed Bag
It’s many things, it’s inspiring, satisfying, frustrating, annoying, gruelling, and many more. Running is like a relationship. A mixed bag of emotions & feelings that course through your body. Some days are just better than others. Some days you find yourself not wanting to look your partner in the eye. It’s been that way the past few days.  A long work weekend, a lack of...

Running's Ultimate Test: 153 Miles in the Sahara →
There’s the 5k, the 10, the half-marathon (21 km), a full marathon (42 km), and the ultra (which is defined as anything 42 +) 50 km, 50 miles, 100 km, 100 miles, etc. Then there’s the grand daddy of difficulty: The Marathon Des Sables. It’s 6 days and 6 marathons long, run in a desert with temps topping 110F, you have to carry your week’s gear and...

C is for Chafing by Mark Remy
This blog is mostly about running and only sometimes about books. The fact that this post is a combination of the two delights me to no end.  Mark Remy’s C is for Chafing, think of it as a children’s book for adults, in the same vein as Go the Fuck to Sleep.  Written by a runner for other runners. I read this interview (NYDailyNews) and couldn’t resist. The inner child in...

Run Free, Run Hard, Run Safe.
Micah True, a well known ultrarunner was found dead this past weekend. True had gone missing days earlier when he went out for a morning run. The circumstances surrounding his death have yet to be verified. He was found with his legs submerged in a cold stream with his water bottle next to him. There were no obvious signs of trauma. I’m sure an autopsy will be performed and further...

Micah True: Ultrarunner's Body Found in New... →
Searchers on Saturday found the body of renowned long-distance runner Micah True, who vanished four days earlier after heading out from a lodge for a morning run in the rugged wilderness near New Mexico’s Gila National Forest. .  It’s always sad when someone dies. But at least he died doing what he loved. Thoughts with his family, friends, and loved ones.

Change it up.
It’s sometimes nice to change it up. I’m primarily a road runner (ha!), but seriously. I run on the road most of the time but occasionally I enjoy running on dirt trails and grass. Grass in particular is great because it’s easy on the knees. One does have to be careful so as to avoid stumbling but it feels good to run on another surface, surround myself with a different...
