Q&A from lowsideoftheroad
Hey G! Question: I went for a more challenging run (aka I'm out of shape...) on Sunday. I noticed the outside of my left foot became very sore throughout the run. It is now Wed night and the pain has no subsided or even dulled. Have you experienced anything like this ? Recommendations ? New shoes?

From my own personal experience, could be a few things:
1. You’ve not run such a distance (aka out of shape) and so you’ve put stress on your foot. In which case you’ve probably hurt some muscles. If it’s still hurting after this weekend, may have to see a doctor. Try to stay off it. Ice and elevate. If possible light footwear, sandals for a few days to let your feet relax. Stay off of them as much as you can.
2. Shoes are a bit more tricky, it’s different for everyone. Are you aware of how you strike when you run during your stride? Do you overpronate (turn inwards) or underpronate? It may be a case of needing shoes with more stability. Or something lighter-weight and more in the style of barefoot (which is really popular at the moment with many runners). It’s hard to say.
If the pain goes away, that means you just worked out your muscles too much and were also probably not wearing the proper running gear. I’d suggest hitting up the Running Room (there’s one just past the Penn Centre) and talking with one of their salespeople. They’re very helpful and I find you don’t even have to buy from them in order to get their advice. You’ll want to though, their gear is sweet. Let the end of this week hit and see how your feet are feeling. Hit them up and tell them wear the pain is and if possible bring in the shoes you currently run on. Often you can tell how a person is running based on the wear of the tread on their shoes. Will also give a sense of your running form, maybe the time between your strides is too fast or not fast enough.
I know I’m probably not helping much by asking so many questions, but there are so many variables. It’s something you have to sort of just play by ear. See how it is as the end of the week, if you need to see a doctor - do so. If it gets better, then consult a running room salesperson and see what they would advise.
Good luck.
