The long run puts the tiger in the cat.

- Bill Squires

Listen to my body? If I was listening to my body right now I would be home in bed eating a danish and reading the funnies.

- ~ Overheard at the 1991 San Antonio Marathon.

Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our consciences, but shouts in our pains. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.

- ~  C.S. Lewis

Best part of running at 5:30 a.m. You feel super-bad-ass for the rest of the day.

Dost thou think because thou are virtuous there shall be no more cakes and ale?

- ~Shakespeare, Twelfth Night

He ran with his head cocked to the side, as if he were listening to the others’ footsteps, trying to determine if they were feeling as good as he was.

- Michael Sandrock on Steve Jones in Running With the Legends

Dancing and running shake up the chemistry of happiness.

- Mason Cooley

In obsessive natures the prospect of pain too becomes an incentive, just as fear of wounds inflames the warrior.

Motivation is an unreliable motherfucker.” ~ Sarah

There are just some days when running has to take a back seat. I love running. It fills up my soul, but some days sitting on a couch and eating cookies WINS over a half hour of running.

Yesterday was one of those days. A 12 hour shift that had me wanting to run, but it just wasn’t going to happen. I don’t feel bad about it. I just accept that this is a reality. Some weeks are better than others when it comes to racing/training. It’s best to not focus on all that negativity and just move forward.

I know you’re out there: runblrs, running tweeps. I know what you’re feeling - that guilt. You see those tumblr running gifs: “Every moment you’re not running someone else is!” You’re like me, you WANT to be out there all the time. But, it’s just not physically possible.

We get sick, tired, hurt, exhausted, frustrated, busy with L I F E. It just happens. My friend Sarah said it up above. Motivation is an unreliable motherfucker. You could just as easily replace the word ‘motivation’ with ‘running’.

Enjoy the pavement. Enjoy the cookies.

Well everyone’s allowed a past they don’t care to mention.

- ~ Apocalypse ~ Bill Callahan

A perfect run has nothing to do with distance. It’s when your stride feels comfortable. You’re on your toes trying to push it. Suddenly you realize you can open it up a bit more. You know you’re at one with yourself and the environment. You’re a little more alive than before you started.

This always keeps me going.

This always keeps me going.

It must be spring; the saps are running.

- derogatory remark popular with non-runners in the early years of the Boston Marathon.

People sometimes sneer at those who run every day, claiming they’ll go to any length to live longer. But don’t think that’s the reason most people run. Most runners run not because they want to live longer, but because they want to live life to the fullest. If you’re going to while away the years, it’s far better to live them with clear goals and fully alive then in a fog, and I believe running helps you to do that. Exerting yourself to the fullest within your individual limits: that’s the essence of running, and a metaphor for life — and for me, for writing as whole. I believe many runners would agree.
